Background of the Study

Medication adherence is a critical factor in the successful management of cancer. Non-adherence to prescribed medications, including chemotherapy and supportive therapies, can lead to poor treatment outcomes, relapse, and even death. Oncology nurses play a pivotal role in ensuring that patients understand the importance of their treatment regimen and adhere to it. Nurse-led education has been identified as a powerful strategy in improving patient knowledge and encouraging adherence to prescribed therapies.

At Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital in Anambra State, oncology nurses provide comprehensive patient education as part of the overall treatment plan. This study aims to examine how nurse-led education can influence medication adherence among oncology patients, exploring the potential benefits of nurse-driven interventions in improving patient understanding of their treatment regimens and, consequently, their adherence to medication.

Statement of the Problem

Medication non-adherence remains a significant challenge in oncology care, with many patients failing to take medications as prescribed. The reasons for non-adherence can include lack of understanding of the treatment, side effects, financial constraints, and poor communication with healthcare providers. In Anambra State, oncology nurses may not always have sufficient time or resources to educate patients about their medications, which could impact their adherence. This study seeks to assess the impact of nurse-led education on improving medication adherence among oncology patients at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the impact of nurse-led education on medication adherence among oncology patients at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital.
  2. To explore the challenges oncology nurses face in providing effective education on medication adherence.
  3. To identify the factors that contribute to medication non-adherence among oncology patients.

Research Questions

  1. How does nurse-led education affect medication adherence among oncology patients at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital?
  2. What are the challenges faced by oncology nurses in providing education on medication adherence?
  3. What factors influence medication adherence among oncology patients in the hospital?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurse-led education significantly improves medication adherence among oncology patients.
  2. There is a significant relationship between the quality of nurse-led education and the level of medication adherence among oncology patients.
  3. Factors such as patient understanding, side effects, and nurse-patient communication influence medication adherence in oncology care.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on oncology patients and their adherence to medication following nurse-led education at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital. Limitations may include variability in patient understanding, differences in nurse training, and potential biases in self-reported data.

Definitions of Terms

  • Nurse-Led Education: Educational interventions designed and delivered by nurses to enhance patient knowledge and encourage adherence to treatment.
  • Medication Adherence: The degree to which a patient follows the prescribed medication regimen, including taking medications as directed by their healthcare provider.
  • Oncology Patients: Individuals diagnosed with cancer, who may require chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and supportive care.
